I’ve been thinking about copyright a lot recently. When I saw this article on the ASCAP website I thought it would be a good exercise to take it apart and respond. So here we go! Anti-copyright crusaders are currently engaged in a publicity campaign to discredit ASCAP’s efforts to defend the copyrights of our professional songwriter and composer members. He said she said. Creative Commons posted a response on their website after ASCAP mailed out a rather inflammatory funding request letter. Now ASCAP is responding to CC and so on and so on… The copyleft movement has encouraged a culture of disrespect for copyright by defending corporate and individual infringers… I do not support corporate infringement in the least. Corporations must follow the law. But don’t lump in individuals with corporations. Whatever the legal implications, there is a massive moral difference between a kid copying a CD for a friend (or, more realistically, swapping some MP3 files) and a corporation using a song in a commercial without paying for it. The kid gets a few minutes of pleasure. The corporation makes millions. …undermining every effort to provide more effective protection, no matter how limited or reasonable… Certainly. Because copyright law [...]

Title: The Graveyard Book Author: Neil Gaiman Date: May-June 2010 Media: Audiobook Rating: 8/10 I very much enjoyed this book, even if I found myself drifting away to others now and then. I think the only issue I had was that, since this is intended as a young adult story, the discussions and characterization sometimes bored me. Not because they were exactly boring, but just because I am still young enough to remember many of the phases described and they are more embarrassing than sweet and reminiscent. I had to read this book. I love Neil’s work, for the most bit, and this story sounded intriguing. That, and it won a Newbery Award last year. Any book that has the combined force of Neil Gaiman’s fantastical mind, a Newbery Award, and the author announcing his receipt of the award on twitter by swearing repeatedly, absolutely must be read.
